    "ROTTEN APPLE"

by RazrSabre on March 25, 2005

    Pros: Light - bright screen

    Cons: Everything else

Summary: The host of problems after 6 weeks of use and 4 replacements :
    1. System freeze
    2. Keyboard light dead
    3. Java applications freezing
    4. Phone goes dead camera on screen shows images as u move the phone but no buttons respond. System has to be reset by removing battery
    5. Talk time 45 mins max ( less than a qaurter of stated specs)
    6. Standby time 24-36 hours max ( 15% of stated ? )
    7. Hinge squeaking
    8. Bluetooth headset weak signal warning and cutoff within 1-2 mins of usage
    9. Speed keys do not work even though phone book shows it assigned to a key, pressing the key gets a msg the key is empty
    10. Phone switches off and restarts frequently

Wonder if this should even be allowed to be on the market with these flaws - or maybe some batches have these and quality control is being compromised.

As if this is not enough hassle, Motorola refuses a refund or a solution even thought their engineers/repair center confirm existance of these issues. Way to go Motorola ! ! !

Motorola apparantly doesn't care because they haven't resolved these issues with their customer support

Got mine off ebay! Had to have it replaced three times for various reasons... 1st wouldn't hold a charge, 2nd, wouldn't connect with blue tooth, third worked, but now i have an issue with the camera freezing up the phone. I have to remove the battery to get the phone to turn on. Just one thing after another, what a piece of crap! Motorola should be ashamed of themselves. I can't believe they are not admitting to it and recalling them all. If anyone knows what I can do to get this fixed, or replaced, let me know please. I hate to go back to the ebayer, he was so nice to replace it three times. Plus i've had it for 2-3 months now. If I don't get something from Motorola, I will NEVER guy another one as long as I live. I will also continue to let ppl know what pieces of crap they have put out. :(( Dissatisfied Customer

    45 min talk time?
24-36 hour stand by? That makes no sense. Ive had the v3 for a year or two now, same battery. About a week ago I made over 45 mins in calls, and my battery lasted well over 5 days on stand by.

You know you can't trust alot from Ebay. I got a Sidekick 2 off Ebay and it still had the previous owners info on it!! yikes! also, it was hella broken so that sucks. 2 replacements and 5 SIM cards later lol. Anywho, if you are still looking for a phone, try the Kyocera Switch_back. I promise it won't let you down! Trust me, i own the Switch_back. Its soo awesome!

Ive owned 2 of them now and each one has given me nothing but problems. I was in the middle of trying to take pics this past weekend and the screen went blue. Then I tried to get into my address book to call someone and everyone of my contacts were gone. I was so upset I even lost all my pictures and all the ringtones I had downloaded to it. I took matters in to my own hands and threw it against the wall and destroyed it. R.I.P. crappy RAZR. Im moving on:)

Original phone didn't hold charge for more than 3 days. Quick and willing replacement is WONDERFUL phone. It works with no problems with the car's bluetooth. Easiest to "dial" , speak & hear of any phone I have had. Easy to read & use buttons. Great volume for in-coming & out-going calls & rings. My spouse is using the second of two very expensive non-Motorola phones purchased less than two years ago. I replaced my original because I found it impossible to hear on it and after my spouse's phone started having problems last month he took my old phone. Now it is having problems just 2 yrs. after we purchased both. If you want a good PHONE look no further.

hopefuly those poor teeny trendies will read some of these reviews before buying this crapy **** phone.

  • reply by: rk1100xx on December 12, 2006

I've suffered with the weak Bluetooth signal issues... Even when the phone and headset were mere feet apart. The phone will even post weak bluetooth messages when I'm NOT using the headset. The phone ends calls, not in the normal manner, but it's like I never made the call. And more often than not, I'll initiate a call, the phone will indicate that I'm "connected" yet neither end of the call can hear the other. And as of last night the phone started randomly call my home number... That was the last number I had dialed (hours earlier). Cingular is sending me a Sony-Ericsson W810i as a replacement. After this experience, I'll be hard pressed to buy another Motorola phone.

This phone should be recalled and replaced immediately. It sucks on its best day.

You guys are pretty harsh on Motorola, and I guess if I had th same problems you guys had... I'd be upset too. Maybe you guys bought a bad batch of phones or got the early productions models - who knows. Bottom line from someone who currently owns 4 Motorola phones (three Razr V3's and a V-360), I have no complaints. The only problem that I've had is I dropped the V360 in my coffee cup while driving. And even then... the dang thing almost worked like normal. Now with that said, if Motorola was producing as many poor phones as some of these reviews suggest - wouldn't I have had at least one of these phones go out. Spend the extra money and buy a good protective case and keep the thing off the ground and dry. T-mobile here by the way... no complaints there either.

I had the exact same issues with this phone! My poor husband bought the phone for full retail price when it hit the market (magenta Razr because I HAD to HAVE pink- silly me). He had it unlocked so I could use it with my carrier (Cingular at the time- also not a great service). After a month this "lovely" phone would shut down... and then restart but to only repeat this annoying cycle within a few minutes. I call what it did the "white screen of death". anywho, moving along, for a 5 minute conversation, I had to call back about 8 or 9 times! then I couldn't get the monstrosity of a phone to charge... invalid battery, unable to charge, insert SIM- you name it, that'd be the excuse the phone kept giving me.

Everyone I'm in school with who have this phone have had similar problems and each have had to replace their phones 3 or 4 times within a few months. I never went to replace it- I know it'll just act up again and don't feel like going through this drill again in a month.

DON'T buy this phone. I've never even really cared for Motorolas to begin with- apparently the color of the phone (pink- one of my favorites) temporarily impaired my judgment and now we're out $400. I just got a Samsung and I adore it... Samsung and LG's all the way, BABY! Never again will I get a Motorola. NEVER.

Have a fabulous day everyone :D

i was completely in love with my black razr when i first bought it a year ago. now i cant wait to find a replacement. ive experienced almost all the same complaints. i also have this distortion on the screen that obstructs viewing; it looks as if the crystals in the display exploded. not worth the investment.

    I completely agree with you
my razr has yet to do the power off deal,
but my keyboard freezes, it occasionally calls the wrong person off the right speed dial number..this is crazy i know...it will saying calling mom..but my best friend will pick up, its crazy, anyways..my phone already has water damage..this is impossible, my phone has yet to see water..it even gets a confetti screen when i cut it on..my battery will short out..it will say yellow, but when you cut it off and cut it back on it will say its fully charged and act normal for the rest of the day. The razr couldnt possibly be the best phone on the market..my keys have already fallen off, including my directional buttons, and ok key in the middle..i wouldnt recommend this phone to anyone, unless that like having lots of complications

well to be honest, Razr V3 was pretty good like an year ago. Untill later on it got old on me. I switched to SONY Ericsson W600i as my plan was over.

Talk about Slvr L7, it is the worst MP3 phone I ever seen. SONY walkman's sound is 50x better and if L7's iTune is bad, watelse does it have?
    dot' even have EDGE

I purchased this phone just over a month ago and have been extremely pleased with it. Absolutely no problems whatsoever. It's been dropped a couple of times and I did wonder what in the world that little spongey thing was that came with the phone, before I found out it was a screen cleaner, thanks to CNet. Aside from that the picture quality is pretty excellent, Bluetooth is even better, my battery has been outstanding, voice clarity is great, and number recognition is beautiful. I am assuming that you did not purchase your phone from a good provider. I use Cingular and have the Razr Special Edition. If you have replaced it as many times as you said that you had, either you are mistreating it or your provider is giving you crap. A previous responder mentioned that you probably have been issued a refurb phone, and I tend to agree with him/her. I've had refurb phones in the past with Sprint and ended up dropping the provider altogether, after being shipped crappy refurbs that were as faulty or worse than you describe your Razr to be. Best advice for ya, get a new provider or at least a BRAND NEW phone and then get to be friendly with your CSR. Your customer service person can do wonders for you.....and if you're not the nicest person in the world, can do quite the opposite. Thank GOD I have A.J. with Cingular. He even gave me his personal cell number in case I had issues with my phone. Good luck!

The battery life is really great, the camera does not freeze. I think you just had one bad experience but dont dis on the Razr because that's one of the most durable phones out there.

  • reply by: tomwince on February 18, 2006

I have been a Cingular customer for quite some time and decided to upgrade my phone. I had a Motorola V220. I wanted something more sleek to fit into my pocket. I don't like things in my pocket to poke out and give me a second hip, or something... The Razr has that very slim profile I desired. It has the least obtrusive design on the market (and is still for the familiar "flip" style as the V220). Transfering my information was made easy, as my the V220 had a SIM card. The Cingular rep transfered the information quickly for me.

Pros: Sleek, attractive design; Big beautiful internal screen; 4x camera; email options; bluetooth and earbud technology; great battery life; good range
Cons: Difficult to see external screen; difficult to see internal screen outside in bright light conditions; hand-held hearing difficult; lack of color selection

    SHAPE/STYLE
Now, I have had this phone for about two months--a silver one. The slim phone easily stores in my pocket and is a great conversation starter. Don't get this phone if you don't like people talking to you--they will ask questions and comment on its style. It's sexy. It's sleek. It's made of metal! Well, parts of it. That feels nice on the skin and is wear-protection useful.
The range is great (receiving a reception where some others don't) and I usually go three days without a recharge. I don't have the earbud (YET!) and I understand that some people get the phone for that very reason "bluetooth"--I am not all into cell phone technology enough to need one--I think it can be a little disconcerting to others when they see you are talking... to NO ONE--but it's not their phone anyway. A lot of people I know have this phone and only one has the earbud. He claims that the earbud is not that clear, but has good range--whatever. I am going to get the earbud because I find it difficult to hear my phone in the hand-held style and it's harder to drive with only one hand--not to mention the legality issue (driving without a hands-free kit/earbud). It seems as though the speaker/"hearing part" is split. Regardless, the V220 was easier to hear from.
The camera is pretty neat. You can take a picture of yourself (or other things... ; ) in the closed position/flipped-down position--it's also 4x digital zoom.
In my opinion (IMO), the external screen sucketh! I used to refer to my phone external screen for the time of day. The protective layer of the screen is too dark to see through unless the sun hits it just right. I usually have to open the phone and look at the internal screen. The internal screen is big and bright--inside and outside under good/overcast conditions. In the sunny South, it is usually very difficult to see the screen outside unless in the shade.
My final throw is the selection of colors. Yes, the black one came out. Yippee. I liked the black, stealth look, but the buttons (external and internal) are silver. I like a solid-colored phone, but that's me. And yes, they have that ice blue color and bright-pink color now. I have been resorting to Ebay for alternative color schemes...
Hmm. Overall, I like the phone for its shape and sufficient functionality. I may like it more after I get the earbud.

you must of bought your razr from a flee market because all of the things that you have stated in your review are false. My Razr has none of the falts that you claim are true i think that in order to prove my point you should go buy another razr from A CINGULAR STORE OR ANY OTHER "GOOD STORE" as opposed to the flee market. I hope my point has been stated clearly enough for you.

I am rather surprise that someone could have that much problems with the phone. I have had mine for almost a year. I had no problems with it. Volume isn't that low on it, works excellent with my headset, I have dropped it once since I have purchase it and it still works fine. The only slow part I have seen about it is for it to pull up my boggle game or in-between sessions of my boggle game. Other then that, It is a great phone.

  • reply by: D_Hyslop on January 10, 2006

It seems to me you're pissed off and have exaggerated your problems. I don't know where to start on flaming your post - so I won't. All I'm going to say is, a) You don't need to pull out the battery to fix a frozen phone; I no longer give you any credibility from that statement and b) 24-36 hours? Are you.. joking? This puppy is able to handle days at a time on a single charge. Wow..

  • reply by: Elkah on January 9, 2006

I got a great deal with this phone but I've had nothing but problems with it. The phones battery life is low and in spite of being in strong cell areas sometimes the signal just doesn't come through. I've had to reset the phone several times and that's all within a week. I've had it for a week and I hate it. I'm actually sending it back tomorrow.

  • reply by: Kamuelaman on January 6, 2006

As soon as I got my Razr I changed the skin/wallpaper/screen saver & the ring tone. What tripped me out the most was taking friends pictures & importing them next to their phone #'s. When they call I see their mug in the little front window. Too cool! Disappointed there was only one game (Bejeweld) & that's only a 'demo' But who cares, I use my Mac to play games on anyway. Black is Beautiful.

Just like many others, I have been using Motorola for 7 years now. I have had 3 replaced. 2 of them were defects and third was the user, heh. Cellphones are not perfect, just like the computers we are on now. I know you can't tell me that you haven't had computer issues... I will let you in on a little secret (well might not be a huge deal, but may help you), when you purchase a cell phone and something goes wrong with it, it's called a defect. Now, when you call your provider or the store where you bought the phone at, they will appologize to you and give you another phone. So you are all happy now and you take the phone home and charge it and start using it and crap starts to happend again. So now your mad and you want another phone or exchange for another. And so on and so on til your happy. What I am trying to say is that if you think your getting the replacement phone as a "Brand New" phone, your not. All your getting is a refubished phone, which means that your most likley to run into similar problems again. May want to ask yourself, how can a company (ATT, Cingular, Tmoble, etc) afford to buy so many "brand new" phones and replace them to you at no charge? Well, ATT, cingular or whoever, sells those phones back in exchange of refurbed phones, and motorola or whoever takes the broken phone fixes it and puts it back on the market. So i wouldn't really go off on motorola about problems with the phone, go off on your provider and insist on sending you a BRAND NEW phone. I have been through this before until I started working for a phone company and seen how they handle these situations.

  • reply by: SirPlatypi on December 30, 2005

Not flaming you but most of your complaints sound like the result of abusing your phone. I assume your under contract an pay $3 a month for insurance. When you go to your service providors corprate service center plop the phone on the counter and tell them your bluetooth conection is bad, the phone resets constanly, and your speed dial keys wont save to an address books profile...
    ...what do they say?

  • reply by: r10870 on December 10, 2005

My black raze has a volume upto to '7' which is still low. Your message mentions that you can adjust it, please show me how. I only have two complains so far:
No. 1 is the low volume (hardly to hear the calling)
No. 2 is that when you set the Audio to "Vibrate" (I always set my phone to Vibrate), the "keypad volume" control disappears in the style details. Which means wen you are in the Vibrate mode, all keypads are silent. This is a stupid design. All of my previous Motorola Phones do not have this problem.

  • reply by: CellPhoneSalesGuy on December 9, 2005

Our cellular phone speciality area located in a well-know, large, "box store" retailer has had only one customer return two Razr V3 handset phones. She returned her phone within the alloted 15-day return policy and stated the phone features she had used were acceptable except for an inability to receive or place calls from within her home. This means that two my knowledge we have not had any of the complaints from our customers who purchased approximately 30 Razr V3 phones (silver models offered via Cincular) in the past 6 months. Yes, BLACK is considered sexy by phone shoppers.

I've had all the same problems as you've stated. I've taken the phone back in with the same results as you. "it's doing what? We don't or can't fix that. We can't replicate the problems. Etc...."
I couldn't use my phone for two days straight cause every time I opened it it went off, and when it didn't, it froze up and rebooted with any key I touched. Eventually it stopped coming back on without pulling the battery. Then it all the sudden is fine.
It's a cool phone, it's got a lot of features, but my last samsung (s300) was a lot smaller, had similar features with the exception of ringers and a camera, and lasted almost three years. And I broke that one, it didn't just crap out. I've had nothing but samsung phones, I got this one because it was the smallest availiable at the time and I could insure it. I should have spent the money and just had another samsung imported. They're awesome, and bulletproof. I should have known better than to go from a Mercedes to a Chevy of phones.

I've had my Razr since they came out and have had none of the problems that you stated, with the exception of the poor visibility in direct sunlight. (you can just turn around to fix this though)

I've since got 9 more of these for our crew and they are doing just fine. I had some problems with my Bluetooth, but it turned out to be the earpiece and not the phone.

Every phone has its good and bad points, but the good far outweigh the bad on this one! I wish they had the Black Razr out from the beginning, because I would've got that one instead of the silver. My silver still gets its share of "ohs" and "ahs" though.

My phone has never been off since the initial charge and I have had nothing but good luck with mine!

p.s. I was down at Best Buy the day after Thanksgiving and they had the Black Razr on sale for $39.00 of course that was for new subscribers, but was good to see that they've come way down from their initial $499.00

I have talked over 45 minutes with no problems. I am a student so its not hard to prove I have talked over 45 min. the phone is still very stong and no problems with the hinge.
It has never froze and it has never turned off by it self...
Everyone i know who has this phone loves it. My friend drops her all the time and has never had any problems...
sorry about your defective phone but just because you have these problems doesnt mean everyone else will...i love this phone and would recomend it to anyone...

I have had this phone now for 3 months. I have experienced no issues that would make me want to change it out for another model. I use Cingular and it has worked great with their coverage for my area. This phone has numerous features, more than I use. Battery life is very good, talk time is very adequate. There are only 2 items that I wish Motorola would of made better prior to putting this phone on the market. 1) Video Camera could take a better photo, better clarity. 2) Vibrate function could be stronger to get your attention better. Other that that I strongly suggest this phone to anyone who might be interested in buying it. It is well worth it!!!!

Ive had this phone for 6 weeks now and it has worked flawlessly. Due to its small size I was careful to READ all the directions that came with the phone, including charging the battery 24 hours before using it ect... Only 2 minor problems so are....one is the sunlight issue, can't see anything. The other is interruptions when entering info/text messaging and you get a call, I often click out of the call and dont even realize it. Other than than I think its a great phone, I love the size and have had no troubles.

I find it awfully hard to believe that after 4 different phones not a single one worked. Maybe you need to reconsider the vendor who sold you the phones. If not I've got a bridge in Brooklyn you might be interested in.

My ex husband has one, my current husband has one, my best friend has one, my neighbor has one, and none of them have had any problems like the ones you describe. Sucks if your experience with this phone is true, but you're the only one with that experience.

Ok, this is a beautiful phone especially at night , But try to see the screen in sunlight "FORGET ABOUT IT" Also the left and right side buttons get pushed by mistake and... lastly it takes forever to fire this baby up and shut it down.

I have same problem with all he explained. Also It's not bright enough to see the screen outside in daytime. I drop this phone on the 3 feet on the concrete, It totally broke. I would not reconmend this Razr phone. I don't like Motorola phones. I'd rather buy Samsung or LG phone.

Without even owning one you should be able to learn that it will hold six numbers per contact. It doesn't sound like you've ever even seen one.

Bought this phone 5 days back and so far it won't last even 24 hours on charge.
Going back to vendor to get an exchange, hope the other one will do better.

all those problems that you say that the phone has, other people dont have complaints aboutthe RAZR . so i dont know if you were drunk when making the review...... but certainly other people who have the phone dont have those issues wit it

After reading reviews, I decided to take a chance & went ahead with the Razr and I regret it. The screen freezed up and never came back after several hours. I removed the battery and it came back. Thats not practical for me to continue doing. Fortunately I have 30 days to return it and I will. Theres no reason a phone as high tech as this to be acting like this. Dissapointed.
