Reviewed by Rich Brown Review date: 2/26/08 Release date: 2/26/08 The good: Fastest gaming performance in its price category (mostly); distinctive chassis; lots of expandability; Nvidia software makes overclocking easy. The bad: Large case. The bottom line: With its second full-fledged gaming PC, Dell shows that it understands the mainstream gaming desktop as well as the high-end. The Dell XPS 630 delivers everything a gamer would want in a sub-$2,000 PC, from its components, to its case, to its powerful software. We've seen no better system in this newly competitive category. Description: The Dell XPS 630 is a Core 2 quad-based, general-purpose computer. Compared to other mainstream desktop computers on the market, it is expensive at around $1,320. This PC comes with 2 GB RAM, and a 500 GB hard disk. Pros: Has an ATI Radeon HD3870 graphics chip, which is somewhat better performing than some similarly priced desktop computers. Also, this desktop computer has a DVD? RW disc drive. Also, the 500 GB hard disk installed on this machine is roomy enough to store thousands of applications and files. However, the Core 2 quad based CPU installed on this machine is fast enough to handle demanding applications, such as digital video. Cons: None noted, given available product data. Suitability: Suited for those who want to balance price with performance. Store massive amounts of data on DVD using the DVD recorder included in this computer. You can compile mp3 CDs with this desktops CD writer. Value: Notwithstanding its expensive price, this desktop computer has great features for the money. However, this PC combines beefy processing power with plenty of storage. Suggestions: (1) Using this PC's Firewire (1394) port, you can connect to many digital camcorders and other equipment and rapidly upload data to the computer's hard drive. (2) If you plan to be playing the latest 3-D games, you may want to invest in a more powerful video card from NVidia or ATI, which are popular with the gaming community (requires an open AGP or PCIe slot).
