Reader request: cameras for eBay shooters

Q: I need a high-quality digital camera for taking pictures and selling my items on eBay. Do I need a 3-megapixel camera for a better-quality picture, or am I wasting my money on anything higher than a 1-megapixel model?

A: It depends on the size of the products you're shooting and how much detail you need to capture in the shots. One other thing to remember is that resolution isn't the only consideration; you're likely to get better color and dynamic range in a camera with 2 or more megapixels, simply because manufacturers put better technology in the higher-priced cameras. A good rule of thumb is that the smaller the object or the greater the detail needed, the higher the resolution you want.

Recommendations
Furniture and cars: Canon PowerShot SD300 (4 megapixels), Panasonic Lumix DMC-LX1 (8 megapixels)
Toys, clothing, and books: Nikon Coolpix 7900 (7 megapixels), Casio Exilim EX-Z750 (7 megapixels)
Jewelry, arts, crafts, stamps, and coins: Canon EOS Digital Rebel XT (8 megapixels), Nikon Coolpix 7900 (7 megapixels), Sony Cyber Shot DSC-F828 (8 megapixels)

Review summary Putting excellent performance in an ultracompact package, the SD300 should please photographers who don't want manual controls or plentiful scene modes. Despite a few shortcomings, the handsome little Nikon Coolpix 7900 packs a punch, with practical snapshot features and solid picture quality. The Canon EOS Digital Rebel XT is an exceptionally small and lightweight camera designed for amateur digital SLR photographers, but it delivers the responsiveness and image quality you'd expect from a semipro model. Despite a few unfortunate flaws, the DSC-F828 has a lot to offer enthusiasts who don't shoot a lot of RAW images. The Casio Exilim EX-Z750 marries form and function with a great design and satisfying manual controls.
