Cars for your MP3 player

MP3 players with 20GB, 40GB, or even 60GB hard drives hold a lot of music, probably your entire collection. Bring one into an MP3 player-compatible car, and you get all your tunes on the road. Making a car compatible with MP3 players is a simple matter of installing an auxiliary-audio input jack into the stereo, yet carmakers have only recently started including this convenience. Some early adopters we've looked at include the 2006 Chevrolet Impala LTZ, the 2005 Honda Element EX, and the 2006 Mercedes-Benz E350. Because an auxiliary jack is such a simple solution, it's also limited in functionality. It transmits only the audio; you have to select music with the MP3 player. For full integration between a portable player and a car, an iPod and the 2006 Scion tC work best.

Review summary The 2006 Chevrolet Impala LTZ makes for a comfortable commuter and gives occupants a little low-priced luxury, but average fuel economy will pinch pocketbooks for longer drives. The Honda Element's looks might not please everyone, but its flexible interior and comfortable cruising manners make it an excellent tool for carrying all types of gear. Mercedes-Benz's new engine, transmission, and electronic options keep the 2006 E350 in the benchmark position for the midsize luxury-sedan class. One of the best values we've seen, the 2006 Scion tC offers strong audio options and decent performance, but leg- and headroom are limited for taller people.
